Course details

Every client, from the sports enthusiast to the stroke survivor, from the post-natal mum to the one managing pain, comes to Pilates to improve accuracy, balance, motor control and coordination. Learning to integrate neurological exercises to the Pilates repertoire will bring fantastic results.

Biomechanics helps us understand how joints move, muscles generate force & how load is distributed but it only takes us so far.  Applied neurology is the real game changer in our client’s performance, pain & movement efficiency. Applied neurology uses:

Brain-first approach– All movement comes from the brain, therefore understanding and improving brain function improves physical function, unlike traditional biomechanics which focus on muscles & joints

Nervous system as the control centre-When the nervous system is deregulated or its efficiency is disrupted, due to stress, injury, trauma or poor sensory input, pain, tension, fatigue and dysfunction can occur.

Neuroplasticity– Neuro-based drills create new neural pathways and better movement patterns as the brain perceives less threat and increased safety

Sensory integration– Movement is guided by sensory information. When sensory input is clearer, the brain updates its internal map. Improving our 3 core systems-visual, vestibular & proprioception- reduces protective responses and brings enhanced movement performance.

On the course you will learn the fundamentals of neurology, explore neuro assessments, discover how our primary sensory systems of proprioception, vision, vestibular and respiration shape and influence our balance, coordination, accuracy, posture and motor control. You will then learn how to apply this knowledge to clients and groups in your Pilates sessions.

The course will be delivered online in 4 weekly 3 hour sessions. You will also have access to an extensive movement library.

What you will learn:

  • You will understand the fundamentals of neuroanatomy and how increasing sensory input brings huge gains in movement output
  • You will learn neuro assessments to highlight deficits and explore practical drills to enhance and stimulate brain function leading to better motor control and performance.
  • You will explore our primary sensory systems of vision, proprioception, vestibular and respiration and how they impact movement and posture.
  • You will learn to integrate neurological exercises into the Pilates repertoire and your sessions.

What you will receive:

This course will be delivered via live stream and will be recorded so you can watch back after to reinforce your learning and if you are unable to attend live.

You will have access to a full range of high quality materials and resources to enhance and further support your learning, included are:

  • Exercise libraries to further expand your proprioceptive drills and movement skills
  • Extensive tutor support to discuss your real life clients
